      Questions about your signs

      What is a Sun sign?

      Your Sun sign is the zodiac sign the Sun was in on the day you were born. The Sun changes sign around the 20th to 23rd of each month, so your birth date is usually enough. On those changeover days, the exact time and place of birth decide the answer.

      What is a Moon sign?

      Your Moon sign is the sign the Moon was in at birth. The Moon moves through a sign in about two and a half days, so the date narrows it down and the birth time settles it when the Moon changed sign that day.

      What is a Rising sign?

      Your Rising sign, also called the Ascendant, is the sign that was rising over the eastern horizon at your birth place and time. It changes roughly every two hours, so it needs an accurate birth time and location.

      I do not know my birth time. What can I still find out?

      Your Sun sign is right for most dates, and your Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars signs are right unless they changed sign that day. The calculator tells you when that happens. Your Rising sign cannot be found without a birth time. A birth certificate or hospital record often has it, or a parent may remember.

      Why does the calculator ask for my birth place?

      The place gives the time zone, including the daylight saving rules in force where and when you were born, and the position of the horizon used for your Rising sign.

      What is my true sign?

      It is the constellation that was behind the Sun on your birth date. Astrological signs are 30 degree slices of the year that start at the spring equinox. The stars have slowly drifted against the seasons over the centuries, so signs and constellations no longer line up. The Sun also passes through 13 constellations, including Ophiuchus, which has no astrological sign.

      How accurate are the results?

      Positions are calculated from astronomical formulas rather than looked up in a table. They agree with professional ephemeris software to within a few arcseconds. The biggest source of error is usually a birth time that is a few minutes or hours off.
